Founded in 2016, Kieni Institute is one of the TVET colleges built by the government in the last few years in its efforts to re-engineer higher education in Kenya to fit the requirements of Vision 2030.

The college’s construction was mainly funded by the state department of higher education under the ministry of education.

Kieni Technical Training Institute: How to access the college

The institute is located at Karicheni, past Chaka town, along the Nyeri-Nanyuki highway or Karatina-Nanyuki road.

It is approximately 5 kilometers from the fast-growing Chaka mini-town and can be clearly seen from the highway.

If travelling from Nanyuki, you will go past Naromoru and drive for about 8 kilometers.

Course duration

KNEC Certificate courses consist of 2 modules and take about 2 years to complete while Diplomas comprise of 3 modules and take 3 years.

Having said that, some courses especially short internally examined certificate courses such as computer studies can take just 3 months.

In addition, HELB awards loans to qualifying students, further easing the fees burden.

The HELB grant typically amounts to shs.40000.

Moreover, other stakeholders such as the county government offer bursaries to deserving students.

Note that the above fee doesn’t include the examination fees for those undertaking KNEC and NITA courses.

You should hence budget between shs.8000-shs15000 to cater for the exams.
