How to send Mpesa to Tanzania
You can also send money to friends/partners in Tanzania through MPESA.
Steps:
- Go to M-PESA
- Select Lipa Na M-PESA.
- Select Pay Bill.
- Enter the 255255 (business number).
- The account number is the intended Tanzanian recipient’s mobile number (format: 2557XXXXXXXX)
- Enter the amount to send.
- Enter your M-PESA PIN.
The money will be delivered to Vodacom’s (Sagfaricom’s partner) M-Pesa account so the user need to be registered on Tanzania’s Vodacom’s M-Pesa unit for easy access.
What To Know About using MPESA
- Safaricom mpesa charges tend to be higher for unregistered MPESA users.
- The mshwari can only hold a maximum of Ksh100,000.00 at any given time.
- The least with-drawable amount from MPESA is Ksh 50.
- You can send as little as Kshs. 10 to another Mpesa user.
- Your Safaricom line must be active to transact on mpesa.

Why can’t I send more than Ksh35,000 to an unregistered number?
The CBK (Central Bank of Kenya) has enacted the Know Your Customer (KYC) or Anti Money Laundering (AML) policies disallowing transfers of amounts exceeding Ksh35,000 to such numbers.
With the new mpesa charges, have you raised the amounts that one can send?
No, the maximum possible amount still remains Ksh70,000.00 for a single transaction and Ksh140,000 in one day. In addition, you can only have a maximum of Ksh100,000.00 in your M-PESA.
What is the least amount one can send using M-PESA?
You can send even Ksh.1 from your M-PESA for free. Furthermore, you can pay for items you are buying on paybill/till number for up to shs.100 for free.
Can I still withdraw from an ATM?
Yes though the maximum amount remains Ksh70,000 per day. The withdrawable amount per transaction is between Ksh20,000-Ksh30,000 depending on the ATM.
My parent is ill and mentally incapacitated. How can we access their mpesa funds to help defray medical costs?
Visit safaricom with these documents for assistance:
- Your national ID.
- A copy of your parent’s ID(certified).
- A court order proving that you’re the appointed guardian to your parent.
I traveled abroad and on returning to Kenya, I found that my MPESA numbers with funds in it disabled. Help!
