Currently, he is serving his second term as the Governor of Kisumu County.

Anyang’ Nyong’o was born and brought up in Ratta, Kisumu County.
He started school at Ndiru Primary School in Kisumu, then proceeded to Alliance High School for his secondary education.
He thereafter attended the great Makerere University in Uganda, where he graduated with a 1st Class Honors Degree in political science and philosophy in 1971. He also served as a guild president at the university.
Anyang’ Nyong’o later on furthered his studies at the University of Chicago, where he graduated with both a Master’s and PhD in political science in 1977.
Just to let you know, he has taught as a lecturer and senior lecturer at the University of Nairobi and also was an associate professor at some universities in Mexico and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
In 1987, he took up the position of Head of Programs at the African Academy of Sciences.
Having been involved in the struggle against dictatorship rule in Kenya throughout his educational course, Anyang’ Nyong’o was among the leaders who made a breakthrough into multi-party politics in 1992 and that’s when he joined active politics.
In the 1992 multi-party elections, he was first elected to parliament and served as the MP for Kisumu Rural Constituency for 20 years till 2013. Following the 2013 general elections, he vied for the Kisumu senatorial seat, which he won and served from 2013-2017.
Besides, he previously also served as the Minister of Planning and National Development of Cabinet and also Minister for Medical Services of Cabinet.
He is the former Kisumu County governor from 2017-2022 and is still now serving his second term as the governor.

Prof.Anyang’ Nyong’o is said to be a wealthy man. He is listed among the richest people in Kenya.
His net-worth is around Kshs.100 million to Kshs.400 million. His primary career as a politician has earned him this much.
Health
Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o is a cancer survivor. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer back in July, 2010 and he got treated at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center by Dr.Mack Roach.
After the treatment, he founded the African Cancer Foundation, whose main aim was to advocate for people across the country to regularly go for medical check-ups to know their health status and seek early medication.
Also, on 12th January 2019, Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o was admitted to Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu. He had attended Archbishop Philip Anyolo’s inauguration ceremony but, unfortunately, started feeling uncomfortable and dizzy.
He was later diagnosed with low blood pressure and was put on bed rest.

He has a 1st class honors degree in political science and philosophy from Makerere University, Uganda. He is said to be the first Kenyan to receive a first class honors degree in the faculty of social science.
He also holds a Master’s and PhD in political science from the University OF Chicago, USA.

Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o is married to the wonderful Dorothy Oganda Buyu Nyong’o.
Dorothy is an alumnus of USIU (holds an MSc in Organizational Development from the institution) and UON, where she graduated with a postgraduate diploma in Mass Communications.
Also, she is the director of both Africa Cancer Foundation and 7th Sense Communications Limited.
