Danson, born Buya Mungatana, is a well-known Kenyan politician, popularly known as the “crocodile eater” for putting Raila Odinga in a political situation.

He is also a lawyer by profession.

Despite being a well-known politician, his name made headlines when he lost a whopping Kshs. 76 million to West African “wash-wash” conmen who promised to multiply his money and make him a billionaire.

Away from the get-rich-quick scam, Mungatana came back to the national limelight in the 2022 general elections after being out of politics for nearly a decade.

He is currently serving as the senator of Tana River County.

Below is Danson Mungatana Biography and other details about him.

Danson Mungatana biography

Danson Buya Mungatana was born on August 9, 1970, in Mombasa, Kenya, to a Pokomo father and a Taita mother. He mostly grew up in Mombasa alongside his siblings, though at some point he went to his home village to complete his primary education.

He started his preschool at Mary Cliff Primary School before proceeding to Ronald Ngala Primary School for his class one to class four. He then joined Arap Moi Primary Boarding School in Ngao, Tana River district, where he completed his primary education (from class five to class seven).

The transfer to Ngao Primary Boarding School in his home village was in keeping with family tradition. Although his father was working in Mombasa, he wanted all his children, at a certain age, to go and complete their primary education in their home village.

This relocation provided Mungatana with an excellent opportunity to learn about the ways and lives of his people, the Pokomo, and other nearby communities.

In addition, the boarding school taught him discipline and the importance of being responsible and self-sufficient at a young age.

All in all, his performance throughout his primary school years was exemplary.

Upon completing his primary education, he joined one of the best high schools in Kenya, Alliance High School. He completed his secondary education in 1987.

He is a 1993 graduate of Nairobi University with a bachelor’s degree in Trade and Investment Law.

He thereafter joined the renowned Kenya School of Law for a postgraduate diploma in Law and graduated in 1995.

Prior to joining active politics, he was a practicing lawyer at his own law firm in Mombasa, the Mungatana Company Advocates.

He was thrust into the national spotlight during the 2002 general elections, when he was first elected to parliament as an MP of Garsen Constituency on a Narc-Kenya ticket. In 2007, he was re-elected to the same seat and appointed branch chairman of Narc Kenya Garsen Constituency.

He has previously served as an Assistant Minister in the Ministries of Lands (2005–2006), Medical Services (2008–2009), Foreign Affairs (2006), and Provincial Administration and Internal Security (2004–2005).

The veteran politician ran for Tana River County governor in 2013 on a TNA ticket but lost to Hussein Dado of the Wiper Democratic movement. Also, in the 2017 general elections, he again eyed the same seat but came forth in the gubernatorial race.

Mungatana was appointed Chairman of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2014. However, his job was short-lived, as his appointment was revoked after six months of working, under unclear circumstances.

In the 2022 general elections, Mungatana bounced back to the political arena after being elected as the Tana River County senator through the United Democratic Alliance party. He had been out of politics for quite a while after he lost his parliamentary seat in 2013.
