Karatina University started off as a campus of Moi University before becoming a Chartered public university in 2013. Since then, the university has grown in leaps and bounds with its five academic schools hosting over 7000 students. Part of the reasons behind this phenomenal growth is the quality learning facilities and excellent faculty.

Indeed, Karatina University has one of the highest populations of professors in the country. Additionally, the university is conveniently located in a very serene location near the slopes of Mt. Kenya about 15kilometers North of Karatina Town.

Karatina University Courses Intakes

Karatina University conducts its intakes in the months of January, May, and lastly in September each year. The institution admits both regular government sponsored students and the privately sponsored students. Karatina university has three main modes of learning:  Full Time, Weekends, and Evening.

How To Apply For Karatina University Courses

Self-sponsored students should the Application forms from the main campus at Kagochi or the school of business (SOB) in Karatina Town.

The Application fee for PhD programmes is Ksh. 3,000 and Ksh. 2,000 for any Masters Programmes. The Undergraduate Programmes application charge is Ksh. 1,000 while that for Diploma is Ksh. 500 same as for the University’s Certificate Programmes.

You should send your duly filled course application forms together with all the relevant certificates, testimonials, and the application fees payment slip to admissions@karu.ac.ke.

Government sponsored students should as usual apply through the KUCCPS website. Applications will normally go through as long as they are made before the stated deadline so keep an eye on the deadlines.

Karatina University students qualifying for HELB loans should apply through HELBS official website atwww.helb.co.ke.

Karatina University Hostels

The university offers in-campus accommodation on first-come first-serve basis at a fee of shs. 6,500 every semester. This fee is paid through the listed bank accounts.

Students who are miss space in the University’s hostel facilities can rent suitable accommodation from the tens of privately owned hostels neighboring the various campuses. The rent charge for these hostels vary widely so you will need to do a bit of window shopping to see the available options.

Students are expected to carry with them adequate Money to cater for food and other personal upkeep expenses.

Karatina University has five academic schools hosting dozens of courses. Here are a summary of the various schools.

i)                 School of Pure & Applied Sciences

Karatina University’s School of Pure & Applied Sciences (SPAS) is responsible for training competent manpower  in professional sciences.

The school mainly focuses on biological, chemical, Actuarial, and computational/ information technology sciences with the graduates expected to secure opportunities in relevant industries, academia, and research.

Here you will find prestigious courses such as computer science, actuarial science, and Biochemistry among others.

ii)             School of Natural Resources and Environmental Studies

Karatina University’s  School of Natural Resources/ Environmental Studies offers courses in Natural Resources Management and environmental studies including a Masters programme in Wildlife management. The School offers the courses at various levels from Certificate to the Postgraduate.

iii)          School of Education and Social Sciences

Karatina University’s  School of Education plus Social Sciences serves those who have aspirations to work in Kenya’s Education sector, various Government agencies, and Social welfare organizations locally and abroad.

You can enroll in programmes such as Community Development, Criminology, Political Science, Public Administration, and Sociology to add to the popular Education courses.

The School of Education is in Itiati, a few kilometers from the Main Kagochi campus.

 

iv)           School of Agriculture and Biotechnology

Karatina University’s  School of Agriculture & Biotechnologies offers numerous Agricultural courses. Their undergraduate programs include Horticulture, Agricultural Extension & Rural Development, Agricultural Economics & Resource Management, and Food Science & Nutrition.

Students in this school benefit immensely from the practicals undertaken at the burgeoning university farm.

The school also offers unique Certificate and Diploma courses in emerging tea technology.

v)               School of Business

Karatina University Needy Students Kitty

The University runs a kitty to help the Needy and Vulnerable(underprivileged) Students pay for fees. The kitty is managed by the  Needy & Vulnerable Students Committee and requires deserving students to apply for support by the stated deadlines.

You must be either an orphan (total or partial) and needy or be a student from a poor background to get assistance from this NVS kitty.

How To Apply For The NVS Kitty

You should collect the NVS kitty application forms from the Dean of Students offices at the University and apply, or download them from here.

Remember to attach the death certificates (where applicable), a letter from your Chief plus other supporting documents when returning the application forms.

The applications are to be forwarded to the Dean of Students’ office strictly before the set deadlines.
