Kiraitu was born on 1st January 1952 in Kionyo village, South Imenti Constituency in Meru County.
His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Daniel M’mwarania.
Murungi started school at Kionyo primary school for his primary education.
He later joined Chuka high school before proceeding to Alliance high school where he completed his A-level exams, scoring four principals and one subsidiary.
He then proceeded to the School of Law at the University of Nairobi, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in law in 1977.
He as well joined the Kenya school of law in 1978 and graduated with an outstanding performance.
His education journey never stopped there as he thereafter enrolled for a master’s in law at the University of Nairobi and graduated in1982.
Also, in 1990, while in exile for 2 years in the United States during Daniel Arap Moi’s one-party dictatorship, he attained a second master’s in law from Harvard Law School.
In the 2022 general elections, he lost his Meru governor seat to Kawira Mwangaza, marking a historical record of tasting defeat for the first time since 1992.

Kiraitu Murungi’s political journey started way back in 1992 when he joined other opposition leaders (e.g. Raila Odinga, Kenneth Matiba, and others) in championing multiparty democracy in Kenya during the late Daniel Arap Moi’s regime.
Right after Kiraitu came out of exile, he joined Forum for the Restoration Democracy (FORD). He vied for the parliamentary seat in the 1992 multi-party elections, and was elected as the Member of Parliament of Imenti South Constituency, Meru County on a FORD ticket.
He was re-elected into the MP’s office of Imenti South Constituency in the recurring years until 2013 (since 1992), when he stepped down to vie for the Meru County senatorial seat. He won and served as a senator from 2013 to 2017, when again he vied for a gubernatorial seat, which he eventually won in the 2017 general elections.
Besides, he also served as the shadow Attorney General and minister of justice between 1992 and 2002.
After the new constitution was approved during the constitutional referendum in 2010, Kiraitu was appointed as Minister for Energy.
In the just concluded 2022 general elections, Kiraitu Murungi lost the Meru gubernatorial seat to Kawira Mwangaza and was appointed to serve as a commissioner of the Kenya Law Reform Commission (KLRC) for six years.
He was sworn in alongside lawyer Scholar Musili Wambua and lawyer Duncan Okello.

Kiraitu’s law career journey started way back in 1977, when he joined the School of Law at the University of Nairobi and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in law.

Also in 1990, while in exile, he took a step further in his law career and attained a second master’s in law from Harvard University.
Between 1978 and 1980, he taught as a lecturer at the Kenya School of Law.
It is also worth mentioning that he founded a law firm and partnered along with law colleagues: Aaron Ringera and Gibson Kamau Kuria. As an advocate, his work was to represent political prisoners of the Moi government against the government itself.
