Charity Kaluki Ngilu is a veteran Kenyan politician with an admirable legacy.

She is one of the country’s most powerful women in positions of power, and she has consistently proven her worth in the political arena over the years.

She also stands out as a remarkable lady, having been one of Kenya’s first three female governors in 2017. Charity Ngilu, along with Anne Waiguru and Joyce Leboso, won the gubernatorial election.

Since then, the trio has paved the way for more women to rise to positions of national leadership.

Let us now examine Charity Ngilu wealth and much more.

Charity Ngilu wealth

Charity Ngilu is one of Kenya’s wealthiest politicians.

Her net worth is estimated to be more than Ksh. 500 million. She’s earned that much from her primary career as a politician and also through investments.

She also owns multimillion dollar businesses, properties, and luxurious houses.

Charity Ngilu biography

Charity Ngilu was born on January 28 1952, in Mbooni, Makueni County.

She started schooling at Mbooni Intermediate School, where she completed her primary education before proceeding to Alliance Girls High School.

Upon completing her secondary education, she enrolled at Kianda College and the Government Secretarial College for a course in Management and Secretarial Studies.

Thereafter, in 1975, she joined the Kenya Institute of Administration and eventually graduated as a certified secretary.

Now a certified secretary, Charity landed a well-paying job at the Central Bank of Kenya and worked as a secretary for some time, before becoming an entrepreneur and later joining politics.

She once served as director of the plastic extrusion factory.

After some years of public service, Ngilu graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Leadership and Management from St. Paul’s University, Nairobi Campus, in 2012.

Her political career started way back in 1992, when she was first elected as a Member of Parliament for Kitui Central Constituency on a Democratic Party ticket.

In the 1997 general elections, she unsuccessfully vied for the presidential seat but was lucky enough to have retained her parliamentary seat on a Social Democratic party ticket, which she served until 2013.

Along with the late Prof. Wangari Maathai, Ngilu made history by becoming the first Kenyan woman to run for president.

Prior to the 2013 general elections, Ngilu had served as a Minister for Health between 2003 and 2007, and also as a Minister for Water and Irrigation from 2008 to 2013.

In 2013, she vied for the Kitui County senatorial seat but unfortunately lost it to David Musila.

Nonetheless, she was appointed as the cabinet secretary for Land, Housing, and Urban development by the former President Uhuru Kenyatta. Sadly, she later resigned in 2015 following heated corruption allegations.

Alongside Anne Waiguru and Joyce Laboso, Charity is one of the three pioneer women who became the first Kenyan female governors in 2017.

In the 2017 general elections, Ngilu ran for governor of Kitui County and won beating, incumbent Julius Malombe.

During the 2022 elections, Charity Ngilu supported Raila Odinga’s bid for the presidency.

Even though the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had cleared her to defend her seat as governor of Kitui County, she still withdrew her candidacy in favor of Julius Malombe.

She was eyeing a higher position in the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition government if it won the 2022 August polls.

Michael Mwendwa Ngilu was Charity Ngilu’s husband. He was also a politician in Kenya.

Sadly, he died on July 1, 2006, while receiving treatment in South Africa.

She is an alumna of Leeds University in London, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

Despite the fact that she is an engineer, she does not spend much time in the engineering field; instead, she has ventured into business, where she is the CEO of Jeikans Holdings Limited.

Lunde is also the director of Broad Visions Utilities and is married to Billy Indeche.

On the other hand, not much of Mwende Kateithia Mwendwa is known to the public, but she is also an engineer and is listed as the director of Kat Michaels Consulting Limited, amongst other directors. The company has been in operation since May 2008.
