Yellow fever is a viral, acute vaccine-preventable disease caused by flavivirus-infected mosquitos

Kenya experienced its first yellow fever outbreak in 1992. Similar outbreaks were later recorded in the country’s western region in 1993, 1995, and 2011, particularly in Kenya’s Rift Valley Province.

Two imported cases from Angola were also reported in 2016.

The viral acute illness resurfaced and struck Kenya again in early 2022. The first case was discovered in Isiolo County on January 12, 2022, with over 14 patients suffering from fever, jaundice, and joint and muscle pains. On March 4, 2022, a yellow fever outbreak resurfaced in Isiolo and County, affecting 11 wards.

As of March 15th, 2022, Isiolo County had reported a total of 53 suspected yellow fever cases, including six deaths, from January to March.

Other suspected cases have been reported from 11 additional counties, including Garissa, Samburu, Wajir, Nakuru, Meru, Tana River, Mombasa, Nairobi, Laikipia, and Trans-Nzoia.

The last case of yellow fever virus was on 3rd October.
